Derek's mother passed away Tuesday morning after a brief fight with multiple myeloma (a blood and bone marrow cancer) and amyloidosis. If you read about the conditions you will know, as we did, that the prognosis was grim, however we thought we had much more time with her than we did and we are all so very sad.
I wrote this the day she died:
Sally Jane Washburn Smith Cottrell
February 16, 1954-June 17, 2008
She was a daughter, sister, wife, partner, mother of two, step-mother of two, grandmother of three, friend to all. She was a runner, swimmer, hiker, biker, and brown belt in tae kwan do. She was spirited and independent, with a bawdy sense of humor. She loved bad puns. She laughed often.
She liked to order salads or sneak tofu into a meal, but she also polished off the occasional bag of chips or container of fluff. She lived life to the fullest. She was brave. She pushed herself to do more. She kept learning. She was a survivor.
She was compassionate and caring. She taught women to nourish and nurture their babies, to listen to those babies and to their own hearts. She helped them birth, welcomed many souls into this world, and even caught some in her own hands. She helped others who were aging, sick, or ready to leave this life.
As she moved from place to place within this world, across a country, across a sea, she met many people and left a lasting impression on them all. She helped so many, and did so much good, that there is no doubt her spirit lives on within us all.

I am so sorry and what a sweet remembrance..makes me think of my mom.
Tara + Derek- I am so sorry for your family's loss. I am sure you will miss
her sorely.
What a beautiful post...I am so sad for your family's loss! You will all
remain in my thoughts and heart, as always, through this sad time. Hugs!
Boy howdy does this hit home...same cancer that took my dad nearly 20 years
ago. Thank You, Tara, for writing such a touching post about Sally! Now
we all know where Derek gets so many of his wonderful qualities. Love and
sympathy to you and your family during the upcoming days, weeks, and
months!
Oh, Tara, I'm so sorry! That just doesn't say enough, does it? Ironically,
I was thinking of Derek's mom on June 17, as I passed a breastfeeding class
at Mercy Health Center and remembered how awesome she was. The world was
brighter with her in it, and we are all mourning with you.
She sounds like she was an amazing woman, Tara. Very nicely written piece
about her. I'm sure you will all miss her tremendously. I'm so sorry for
your huge loss.
Oh, I am so, so sorry to hear this. She was so young. What you wrote is so
beautiful, Tara. What a woman she sounds like! Please know that I will pray
for peace for the whole family in this difficult time.
Tara and family,
I'm so sorry for your family's loss. We always hear such bad things about
mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationships, and it's touching to hear how
much she meant to you. She sounds like an amazing woman.
